7-mile-loop stroll to a waterfall (its flow varying seasonally) at Lost Creek to much longer and more strenuous treks. You can begin from the Visitor Center or drive into the loop, park your car, and start from points therein. Every trail is incredible-glance over your options and decide what you might be looking for. If you’re up to it, however, we can’t stress enough that the way to really see the canyon is by hiking. Farther along, the mountains become solid limestone with canyons running between them, which lead to an evergreen forest-a surprising sight in the desert. As you drive, observe how dramatically the milky-white limestone alternates with iron-rich red rocks. You can stop the car to admire a number of fabulous views and sights along the way, have a picnic, or hike. It really is a loop, and it only goes one way, so once you start, you are committed to driving the entire thing. The easiest thing to do is to drive the 13-mile scenic loop (or give it a go on your bike for a moderately difficult ride). In spring, the desert blooms with extraordinary wildflowers. Ascending the slopes from the valley, you’ll see cactus and creosote bushes, aromatic purple sage, yellow-flowering blackbrush, yucca and Joshua trees, and, at higher elevations, clusters of forest-green pinyon, juniper, and ponderosa pines. Red Rock’s valley is home to more than 45 species of mammals, about 100 species of birds, 30 reptiles and amphibians, and an abundance of plant life. As time progressed, iron oxide and calcium carbonate infiltrated the sand, consolidating it into cross-bedded rock.Ībout 100 million years ago, massive fault action began dramatically shifting the rock landscape here, forming spectacular limestone and sandstone cliffs and rugged canyons punctuated by waterfalls, shallow streams, and serene oasis pools. Some 45 million years later, the region was buried beneath thousands of feet of windblown sand. As the waters receded, sea creatures died, and the calcium in their bodies combined with sea minerals to form limestone cliffs studded with ancient fossils. Massive fault action and volcanic eruptions caused this seabed to begin rising some 225 million years ago. Cliffs cut by deep canyons tower 2,000 feet above the valley floor.ĭuring most of its history, Red Rock Canyon was below a warm, shallow sea. And formations, such as Calico Hill, are brilliantly white where groundwater has leached out oxidized iron. Orange and green lichens add further contrast, as do spring-fed areas of lush foliage. Over eons, the forces of nature have formed Red Rock’s sandstone monoliths into arches, natural bridges, and massive sculptures painted in a stunning palette of gray-white limestone and dolomite, black mineral deposits, and oxidized minerals in earth-toned sienna hues ranging from pink to crimson and burgundy. The geological history of these ancient stones goes back some 600 million years. The center is open daily from 8am to 4:30pm. It features outdoor exhibits on the flora and fauna found in the canyon and you can also pick up information on trails and the driving route. Just off NV 159, you’ll see the turnoff for the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center, (tel 702/515-5350), which marks the actual entrance to the park. There are picnic areas along the drive and in nearby Spring Mountain Ranch State Park (tel 702/594-7529 5 miles south, which also offers plays in an outdoor theater during the summer. Especially notable is 7,068-foot Mount Wilson, the highest sandstone peak among the bluffs for information on climbing, contact the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center at tel 702/515-5350. The National Conservation Area offers hiking trails and internationally acclaimed rock-climbing opportunities. There are many interesting sights and trail heads along the drive itself. You can drive the panoramic 13-mile Scenic Drive (daily 6am–dusk, $7 per vehicle) or explore more in-depth on foot, making it perfect for athletes and armchair types alike. Less than 20 miles away-but a world apart-this is a magnificent, unspoiled vista that should cleanse and refresh you (and if you must, a morning visit should leave you enough time for an afternoon’s gambling). If you need a break from the casinos of Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is balm for your overstimulated soul.

Rothchild sensed the camaraderie between singer and band. Its lyrics echo the insistent "You know I need a man" on Joplin's self-penned "Move Over," and both songs feature scorching, soul-deep vocals that may have drawn on her time singing in church as a child. Its churchy gospel chords accentuate the sad story being told: "The fevers of the night, they burn an unloved woman/Yeah, those red-hot flames try to push old love aside/A woman left lonely, she's the victim of her man, yes she is!" But it's hard to see Joplin as a victim, except perhaps of the excesses that took her life all too soon. Just as riveting is "A Woman Left Lonely," written to order by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham. Shuman's lyric for "Get It While You Can" made for an eerily fitting epitaph: "Don't you know when you're loving anybody, baby/You're taking a gamble on a little sorrow/But then who cares, baby/'Cause we may not be here tomorrow, no." Joplin's delivery is raw, pained, personal and above all else, honest. Ragovoy, a favored songwriter of Joplin's who had already provided her with "Piece of My Heart," is also represented with "My Baby" and "Get It While You Can," both co-written with Mort Shuman, one-time partner of Doc Pomus and devotee/English lyricist of Jacques Brel. She invented Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns' "Cry Baby," a 1963 hit for Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters, as a psychedelic blues with deep soul. All of the singer's disparate styles were employed on Pearl. Though it's doubtful Joplin knew she was racing against time, the original album never lets up, from the opening drum beat of "Move On" to the final crescendo of "Get It While You Can." Recording commenced in July 1970 sessions were still taking place when Joplin died on the evening of October 4, and her vocal of "Mercedes Benz" was recorded just days earlier on October 1. Both approaches are valid but neither could be called "definitive." However, Sessions confirms there's still much, much more to explore when it comes to Janis Joplin. Sessions drops those tracks and replaces them with a behind-the-scenes look. The first (2005's Legacy Edition on Columbia/Legacy C2K 90282) supplemented it with a live performance from 1970's Festival Express tour. Sessions is the second 2-CD set devoted to the album. Only "Me and Bobby McGee" exceeds the four-minute mark. A sense of drama permeates the original album which wasn't always apparent in her earlier, more free-form recordings indeed, this is as tight a group of songs as she ever recorded. Joplin pleads, wails, shrieks, and otherwise gives herself in to the music with abandon and fervor. Some of the most forceful repertoire of her all-too-short career can be found on the album, produced by Paul Rothchild, best known for his work with The Doors. Pearl captured all of these contradictions, and more, better than any of the artist's albums before it. She was a songwriter of no small talent but best known for her interpretation of others' songs. Joplin was both larger-than-life and shy, supremely confident but pained. The answer would have to be "yes" and "no," which is altogether appropriate for an artist of many contradictions. (A vinyl Sessions highlights album and a 180-gram pressing of the original LP will also be available on Record Store Day.) So is this the last word on Pearl? Pearl has arrived on CD once more from Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings under the title The Pearl Sessions (88697 84224 2), expanding the original 10-track album with a clutch of mono singles, two live tracks, and nearly a disc's worth of alternate takes and studio banter. One dictionary defines "pearl" as an object both "hard" and "lustrous," synonymous with "gem" or "jewel." Couldn't all of those words also describe Janis Joplin? Pearl was, of course, the name bestowed upon the singer by her final group, The Kozmic Blues Band, and the title of her final, posthumously released album from 1971. I made this for our guests at Thanksgiving they noticed the flavors at first bite. It's a great recipe and one I will keep coming back to.Īmazing! I used wild mushrooms and could hardly stop tasting before baking this dish. If you don't have dried onions, you can caramelise onions and use them instead. This is worth the time and effort even in the Spring. Head this way for more of our best Thanksgiving recipes → Let sit 10 minutes to set before serving.Įditor’s note: This recipe was originally published in November 2016. Top with fried onions and continue to bake just until onions are slightly darker and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake until casserole is lightly browned on top and around the edges, 15–20 minutes longer. Cover tightly with foil and bake until sauce is bubbling, 25–30 minutes. Pour sauce over (it may not look like enough, but it will get saucier as it bakes). Step 4Īrrange green beans and mushrooms in a 2-qt. Remove from heat and whisk in garlic and Parmesan season with salt and pepper. Increase heat and bring to a simmer, whisking often, and cook until béchamel sauce is thick and bubbling, about 5 minutes. Whisk in flour and cook, whisking occasionally, until roux is golden brown and smells mildly nutty, about 4 minutes. butter in a large saucepan over medium-low. butter, salt, and remaining oil, mushrooms, and thyme. Season with salt and transfer to a plate. Cook, tossing occasionally, until butter browns and mushrooms are dark brown and very tender, about 4 minutes longer. Toss and continue to cook, tossing occasionally, until browned on both sides, about 3 minutes more. Cook half of mushrooms, without stirring, until golden brown underneath, about 2 minutes. Working in batches, cook green beans in a large pot of boiling salted water until bright green and halfway to tenderness, about 3 minutes per batch. While many a casserole dish can be made ahead of time, this one is best made the day of, so plan accordingly and use the bake time to work on other classic holiday side dishes, like mashed potatoes, and putting the finishing touches on a savory sweet potato casserole. Chris’s recipe also calls for fresh green beans instead of canned to maintain a crisp-tender (never mushy) texture.Īs for the crunchy finish on top of the bean mixture that everyone is vying for at the Thanksgiving table? You can make your own with fried shallots, but those bottled crispy fried onions from French’s are famous for a reason: They are astonishingly delicious and practically define this recipe, so we didn’t mess with them here. Well-browned mushrooms are crucial for building flavor here, so make sure not to salt them until they’ve reached a dark brown hue ( salting them too soon will lead to soggy, steamed ’shrooms instead). He swapped out Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup for fresh, sliced criminis and a béchamel finished with Parmesan, which captures the intensity of just-seared mushrooms as well as all the umami potential of the nutty aged cheese. In 2016, our own Chris Morocco set out to develop his version of the ideal homemade green bean casserole recipe. There are many variations of this perfect side dish out there, including ones made with canned soup and canned green beans, some made in slow cookers, those finished with cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs, and, of course, the one known as French’s Green Bean Casserole, which is topped with the brand’s signature Crispy Fried Onions. According to Campbell’s Soup Company, which is responsible for the original recipe, it’s served at 20 million tables every year. For many, no Thanksgiving is complete without a classic green bean casserole. We may make an exception if it's truly unique and helpful. Self-promotional posts must be pre-approved by a mod.
